Are looking at the Outdoor Edge razor pro hunting knife. Well, obviously you are or you wouldn’t be here. After owning this knife for a couple of seasons, here is what I think.
The features of the knife
This knife features a 3.5-inch cutting blade and a 2.5-inch gut hook. This knife is a replaceable blade knife, that comes with 6 razor-sharp replaceable blades. This knife is compact 4.5 inches when closed, and 8 inches when open.
This knife has rubbery grip scales that come in colors black and orange. The sheath of this knife has a hole in the bottom to drain any water that gets in the sheath so your knife doesn’t rust.
In the back of the sheath, there is a pocket that holds the extra razor blades.
The grip
The grip of this knife is made of a rubber material that is textured. The inside of the handle has stainless steel supports and stainless steel pins that hold the two scales of the rubber and steal together.
The blade
The blades of these knives are made out of Japanese 420J2 stainless steel. This blade steel is not known to be very durable or to keep its edge. The first blade of this knife is replaceable and the second blade is a gut hook. A small button on the side of the knife allows you to take off the replaceable blade.
Some people complain that replaceable blade knives are not durable, but I have not had that bad of an experience with them. I have not broken a tip, but I have chipped some of the blades.
The gut hook of this knife is sharp, but I am not a huge fan. The gut hook of this knife can not cut through the hide of any animal much bigger than a small deer. when I used this knife on an elk, I was not impressed by the gut hook, it was not able to cut through the hide, even on the thin parts of the hide. Sadly the gut hook is not replaceable, but the gut hook seems to not lose its edge very easily.
The sheath
The sheath of the knife is made out of a durable fabric and has a few features. This knife sheath has two compartments, one for the knife and one for the extra blades. This knife sheath also has a hole to drain any water.
The two compartments are a knife holder and an extra blade holder. The blade holder is elastic so you can pull the extra blades out easier. The sheath has a belt loop and weighs about 2 ounces.
cons
One of the problems with this knife is cleaning it. Because the knife is so wide and has a lot of compartments, you can get dirt and blood in between the knife scales. The replaceable blade area is also another part that can be a pain to have to clean. Cleaning is the main reason I don’t like to process animals with a folding knife; while they are smaller, you can’t get in between the handle scales to dry it out. So after some use, the inside of this knife started to rust.
Weight. This knife is heavy. It is almost 12 ounces with the sheath and extra blades. However, when compared to other hunting knives, like the Benchmade steep country, a knife with better steel and is a fixed blade, it is 8 ounces heavier.
Cutting. While this knife is razor-sharp, it is not the best at skinning game. When I skinned an elk with this knife, the blade could barely cut through the thick hide. It took a knife swap in the middle of the skinning and 8 replaceable blades. So while this knife is replaceable, it might not be worth the time to replace the blades that many times, only to have to swap knives. if you do plan on skiing game with this knife, I would recommend sticking to thin-skinned game such as deer or furbearers.
Pros.
Replaceable blade. The replaceable blade on this knife is a major pro. If you have ever had the problem of having to sharpen your knife in the field, this knife gets rid of that problem, by just having to take the blade out with the push of a button. But you will have to replace blades often.
Textured grip. The textured grip of this knife will keep the knife from slipping out of your hand in rainy conditions. The rubber knife grip also is more weather resistant than a traditional knife grip like wood so your knife will last longer.
Two blades in one. With this knife, you get two blades, a gut hook, and a regular knife blade. For gutting game, you have a stainless steel gut hook that comes razor sharp. You have a regular knife blade that is replaceable so you don’t have to sharpen any blades.
Compact package. If you go on a western hunt this knife is compact. If you need extra pack space for western hunts this knife is compact 4.5 inches when closed. The compactness of this knife will allow you to fit more stuff in your pack. While a little heavy, this knife is small.
Summary
If you are looking for a new hunting knife this might be the one you are looking for. This knife is full of features that come in a small package. I would say give this knife a look if you are looking for a new knife. But be sure to do your research as there may be better knives out there.
