The 458 SOCOM is a cartridge that was made because there were problems with the 5.56 (the normal Ar-15 caliber) not having enough power. To fix said problems, SOCOM made the 458 SOCOM which is a cartridge that has more power than the 5.56.
the 458 SOCOM is good for hunting at close range or shooting at close range. The heavy big bullet that the 458 SOCOM shoots means that it packs a lot of energy and a lot of momentum.
Ballistics wise, the 458 SOCOM is not a very good long-range cartridge. The 458 SOCOM is a short fat cartridge that shoots abig bullet so it doesn’t have good long-range trajectory. If you are looking for a cartridge that will shoot good past 200 yards this is not the cartridge for you.
