A bow sight is the most important part of a bow. Without a bow sight, you would not hit your target. So as you can imagine getting the right one is important. This blog will help you choose how much you need to spend on a bow sight.
What is the difference between a cheap sight and an expensive sight?
Cheap sights are often made of plastic so they don’t hold up for long. Cheap sights also have fewer features and are very bare bones. Expensive sights are made out of metal and are more durable, have more features, and have brighter pins.
How much should i spend?
How much you should spend is dependent on what you want. higher-end sights will offer more features like micro-adjust, 3rd axis adjustment, and stuff like that. But you don’t need that to be accurate or hunt deer.
If you are hunting deer, then you can just get a sight that is bare bones. Features like micro-adjust will help with sighting in but don’t do much unless you are often changing setups or are a target shooter; if you hunt deer and don’t plan on changing setups, you don’t have to spend much.
To know how much to spend you have to take into account what you will be doing with it. You may like features like toolless adjustment or micro-adjust but do not need it for your hunting setup.
What is 3rd axis, and micro adjust?
You may have heard 3rd axis or micro-adjust but what does that mean?
What is 3rd axis? When you shoot your bow on level ground you can level it and shoot fine. But when you shoot up or down a mountain your bow may hit left or right. But why does it do this?
When you get your sight the housing of the sight could be canted. It will be fine on level ground, but when you shoot up or down the sight will move left or right and you will hit off. This is not always the case but it can happen. So some sights offer a 3rd axis adjustment so if it is off, you can move it.
What is micro-adjust? Micro-adjust comes in handy when you are off by a couple of inches at a said distance and you need to move your sight. If you are off by 2 inches at 60 yards it is hard to just slide your pin that little distance; So when you have micro-adjust, you can just move your sight a couple of increments and be good to go.
mid-priced sights.
Mid-price bow sights will get you features like micro-adjust and maybe 3rd axis if you spend your money right. Black gold and Spot hogg are 2 brands that are popular for making mid-priced sights. They make most of their sights in the 150-300 dollar range with plenty of features. These sights are often all you need to hunt and are way more durable than cheap sights because they are made fully out of lightweight metal. However, these mid-price sights will not last a lifetime and will need to be replaced every few years.
High price sights.
This is where you run into most target sight manufacturers that also make hunting sights. These are the highest quality bow sights. These will last a long time but also cost a lot.
These sights have smaller pin sizes for better aiming, 3rd axis adjustment, and Micro adjustment. But all of this is not needed to kill a deer which is something to take into account.
These sights are in the 400+ dollar range, so you will have spent a lot once you get a bow, a sight, a quiver, and a stabilizer. Most regular sight manufacturers have high-end sights that cost a lot like Blackgolds pro sights or acsell sights.
I hope that this article has helped you pick what sight you want. Make sure you know you’re buying something good and buy from name brands. So anytime you need to buy a new sight you can come back to this article and it will help you choose a sight.
