Don’t have a tree stand? Don’t have a ground blind? The good news is you don’t need one to kill a deer or an elk or a turkey. I have hunted many times without one.

So, let’s check out how to hunt without a fancy stand or blind.

Setup in the right spot.

First, find where the animals are moving. Try to hunt over water, food or a main trail. This will help you see more deer and get a shot at one.

How to set up

You can do two things. One climb in a tree and sit on a limb [wear a safety harness]. Two sit on the ground.

Climb in a tree.

If you find a tree that has limbs to climb on then you can climb the tree and sit on a thick limb. This can be very dangerous. Make sure the limb is at least 8-9 inches thick. Wear a safety harness and clip your safety harness to a limb that is at least 8 inches thick. if you can’t find a limb like this don’t climb the tree. This method can be very effective and useful for filling a tag.

Sitting on the ground.

If you choose to sit on the ground then you need to stay hidden (obviously). Make sure you have a good backdrop so you don’t stick out. A back drop is when you have brush behind you. If you are not wearing camo and don’t have a back drop the animal will never come close enough for a shot. If at all possible, then put something in front of you: A tree limb or some kind of brush or thick grass. This will help hide your movement so you’re not sticking out.

Sometimes people say you need a blind or tree stand to hunt an animal. But do not be discouraged: This is simply not true. If you set up right and be patient you will find success.
