Choosing the right arrow weight is important before archery hunting a deer.
The best way to add weight to an arrow is by putting in an insert or buying a new broadhead.
If you want to shoot a deer, you need a balance between weight and speed. Having a light arrow will lead to inadequate penetration. But too heavy of an arrow will lead to getting no distance out of your setup.
40 pounds | 400-500 |
50 pounds | 430-530 |
60 pounds | 445-550 |
70 pounds | 460-600 |
The reason the lighter poundage have lighter arrows is because if you shot a 600-grain arrow out of a 40-pound bow, it would not shoot much further than 40 yards. There are plenty of people who shoot great but can only pull 40 or 50 pounds. Therefore if they shot a 600-grain arrow they would not get as much as they should out of their setup.
When I put this chart together, the heavy arrows are the max weight you want to shoot to get maximum range and penetration. This chart will let you hunt animals from turkey to moose. The bigger the animal the heavier of an arrow you want to use. Not that you don’t want to use a heavy arrow on smaller animals you just can get away with lighter arrows on smaller game.
This chart should give you a good idea of what arrow weight to use. It will give you good speed and good penetration for most game animals. So give these arrow weights a shot, and if you don’t like them, you can always change your setup.
